I want to spend next summer vacation (2007) with my family in USA and I would like to take an english course to improve my english. We want to rent a small apartment and stay about 2 months. I prefer to stay in New York, but my mom prefers to stay in San Diego because we’ve been there before. Which city do you think is the best place to stay and to learn english? How much does the short term apartment rental cost there? And about the cost of living (food, transport, etc), is it expensive (comparing to europe)? Please give me some recommendations and useful informations. Thanks in advance.

in NYC the cost of an apartment may be 2,500 per month. The advantage is that there are so many places you can go by public transport; you can take a trip to DC and other places.
I would say neither. Both North Dakota or Minnesota are great places to visit. the living is cheaper in ND and the people are nicer, a lot safer than a big city. There are more things to to in these states than I can count. They both have nice state parks and scenery. Minnesota has the Mall of America if you love shopping. I would at least look in to these. Have fun
Los Vegas, 600 month, all included and furnished. Fun, fun fun!
To learn English I would have to say San Diego because New York they have strong accents. Also I know that California is expensive because I live there but I believe that New York is much more expensive. I really can’t compare it to Europe without knowing which part of Europe. I mean Greece is very in expensive but England London in particular is a lot more expensive than Greece. I think that it just depends on what you are looking for. California is a much bigger state, it isn’t humid in the summer like the east coast. There is really beautiful plants and flowers in California San Diego has a great night life as does New York. I have traveled all over Europe, the Caribbean Islands, Hawaii and many other US states and I really have no desire to go back to New York but a lot of people like it there. So I think it really depends upon what you are truly looking for. If it is to learn English then California is your place. If it is to be around a lot of people, traffic, and buildings then New York might be your place. I am sure you will have an awesome time no matter where you end up.
I live in Los Angeles, so I’d say expect to pay anywhere from $800-$1500 (dollars, not pounds) per month for an apartment (in San Diego, if you can find one that rents month to month (and depending on how many bedrooms and how nice you want it to be.) I’ve heard that New york can cost you closer to $2000-$4000 a month.
As for food, in California, you can pay $4.95 a person at a fast food restaurant or $10 at a nicer restaurant or $20 a plate at an even nicer restaurant. If you plan on grocery shopping, expect to pay $2 for a dozen eggs, $2-3 for a pound of meat, $1 for a loaf of cheep bread. Sandwich meat is usally $2.50 for a pound of the cheap stuff or $7.50 for a pound of good deli meat. Cheese is $2.50 or $3 a pound.
As for learning english, I think both cities are good. In San Diego, there’s a high population of hispanics and other foreigners that all need english classes, so there are a lot offered. I think New York also has a ton of non english speakers and thus lots of english classes offered.
I imagine that New York would be inconvenient if you are used to driving your own car from place to place and don’t like to be crowded. New York is definately more expensive too. In San Diego, you would need to drive your own car ($20 a day to rent) and it won’t be as crowded as New York. You can also visit Hollywood, San Fransisco and the Red Wood forrest. Not to mention a lot of other great things. From New York, you can visit Canada and the Niagara Falls as well as many New York land marks.
Be sure to use the internet car rental sites to find the best rental prices (sometimes as low as $14 a day) and the best hotels or apartments. It’s a big help. Try or
Both places are great, but expensive. Depending on when your coming, San Diego might be nicer weather. Apartments in both places will be a lot of $$. You will be better with transportation in New York- cabs and subway. Both places have fantastic food, from the affordable to the very expensive. I think the night life is better in New York, clubs and shows. Go on the Internet and check out Apartment rentals and then go from there.
PS. San Diego has better beaches
