I am a single woman trying to rent an apartment in New York. Any suggestions?

I have had prior situations in Oakland with creepy, noisy landlords, I want to avoid this.
I want to live in an area where I will not have to pay more than 1600 a month for a two bedroom.
I do not mind living in a burrough.
The neighborhood should be close to the train station or a ferry.

I suggest you also consider, if your credit is good, that you find a foreclosure home and buy it.
Do not be a tenant if you do not have to.
The realtor before me is right, you might want to try to buy something, It will be hard to find a place in NY with bad Landlords in your past. They will not give you a good rating.. I think you might have left a bad impression behind. $1600 a month will be hard in Manhattan, but like you said off the island might be easy to find something. Closer to train and ferry more condensed it will be, and higher rents.
I would definitely not tell your prospective landlord that your last one was a creepy person LOL
