OK…first I think China in general is not the place to relax…Probably a beach on a tropical island would be more suited for that…but I suspect you want a little bit more experience and depth for this trip…Like I always say, traveling in China is not like a typical holidays, it is rather a journey of discovery. Be prepared to be go through many emotions, from “wow” to “yuky”…
This being said, at 18 years old (which I wish I was), I would just get a plane ticket, a Lonely Planet and phrasebook guide, and go. If you have an open mind, you will meet so many nice people and you might not even need to open your guidebook. Of course, you will want to see the must-see spots: Forbidden City, Great Wall, Terra Cotta warriors, Guilin, Kunming, Hangzhou,…The LP guide will help you prepare your trip and you can then travel on your own…you can also google a tour company that organizes tours to China, just use their itinerary to design your own journey…or maybe you want another experience…just go with the flow and immerse yourself. I’ve been to China countless times in the past 20 years and I still haven”t seen all the places that most tourists see on their 14-day whirlwind tour of China, but I don’t care…People are more important than places…
I don’t speak Chinese well either, actually I am embarassed to say that I never had the patience to learn Mandarin but I am waiting to hear back from “Mandarin Addict” about how he did with his Mandarin course…In the meantime, doesn’t matter, a good phrasebook, some body language, and a nice smile will take you where you want…
beijing: a modern and old city.you can see thousand years of history and buildings.
Xi’an: to see the ancient military forces.old history
Shanghai: to see the most modern city in China
sichuan jiu zhai gou: beautiful place in nature
Guilin: beautiful nature and relaxing place
yunnan lijiang: old and beautiful town
i think to rent a room to stay one month in a place is not a good chioce.since you have so much time, you can spend the time in different places.to discover different things.from old history city to modern city.from developing economic city to pure nature town, from develop city to undevelop villages towns.it dosent matter if you dont speak chinese.many foreigners come to china alone they dont speak chinese too.you can find some friends before coming.they will help you.
maybe in this website you can find some friends in China.
stay anywhere OUTSIDE of china, unless you like typhoid, yellow fever, or opium.
Definitely Beijing. If you truly want to experience Beijing, go get a bike, bar gin on some faux items, try hotpot/desserts, get lost in the hutongs (old Chinese houses), take a walk at night to see old women and en dancing and remember to take photos whenever and where ever you are,.
