Renting a car in Beijing, China?

I’m going on vacation to China in September (Beijing/Great Wall). Is it difficult for an American to rent a car there? What do I need in terms of paperwork? What is the price range I should expect?
Thanks!

International driving licenses are not valid in China. You must have a local one in order to drive a vehicle in China.Hertz in Beijing have a good English speaking help line. You should contact them for details. Also look up these places:
Trust me, you don’t want to try driving here. You would never understand how the traffic works or moves.
I suggest you use other transportation instead of driving. The traffic in Beijing is bad and the roads are confusing even for the locals. Besides, the drivers there aren’t the best ones in the world so you might have a good chance getting in accidents if you don’t know your way around. And since you are a foreigner you’ll really want to avoid that simply because you don’t speak Chinese.
In general, driving in Beijing isn’t a good idea if you are not a local. There are taxis EVERYWHERE and they are really cheap. You can explore the city with any buses and find your way back with a cab. Have fun.
- Don’t drive in China if you don’t want to get into accident. The driving rules are very different from US and China. You won’t get used to it as a traveller.
e.g. : Peope can walk accross highway. If you hit them, you will be in trouble. (Beijing is actually not that bad. Guangzhou is worst.) Tailgate is allowed and necessary in many case.
- Since salary is very cheap in China, you can rent a car with a driver which will only cost your about USD$60 per day for a nice car. (I am not sure if price included fuel.)
DO NOT DRIVE IN CHINA. Not worth either the cost or safety risks. The taxis are so cheap you can rent one for a day (negotiate a price with any driver, no need to go to an agency for this) and they’ll take you wherever you want. If you want to brave the busses and subways, they’re not so bad, either, just crowded!
